LOVEN was born in Thief River Falls, Minnesota and grew up in Minneapolis where he graduated from Minneapolis College of Art and Design with a BFA in Painting and Drawing. It was there that LOVEN came under the international influences of visiting teacher/artists Fred THIELER (Germany), Kenneth DINGWALL (Scotland), Juhana BLOMSTEDT (Finland/France) and professors Siah ARMAJANI (Iran/USA), Aribert MUNZNER (Germany/USA), Phyllis ROSENBLATT and Roman VEROSTKO, as well as forming a lifelong friendship with photographer Robert BERGMAN.
LOVEN earned the MFA degree in Painting from Maryland Institute College of Art, Hoffberger School of Painting. His MFA mentors were Grace HARTIGAN and (Monuments Man) Salvatore SCARPITTA, joined by Alex KATZ to form LOVEN'S MFA thesis committee. In 1997 and 1998 Loven completed Professional Development coursework in design language and theory at Harvard University with Massimo VIGNELLI and others.
LOVEN's paintings have been exhibited in numerous group shows including the Baltimore Museum of Art, Minnesota Museum of Art, Butler Institute of American Art, Santa Monica Art Museum, Cornell Art Museum, and Louis Meisel Gallery, New York City.
Solo shows of LOVEN's work include Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery (Cleveland, 2017 and 2012), Dacia Gallery (New York City, 2013), and Emily Davis Gallery, University of Akron (2008).
DEL REY LOVEN held the rank of tenured Professor of Art at The University of Akron from 2006-2020. His prior academic appointment was Chair of Art, Design and Architecture at Judson University in the Chicago area, where he led the development of degree programs in Fine Art, Graphic Design, Interior Design, and Architecture, and taught all levels of painting and drawing.
From 2010-2015 LOVEN served as an art and design consultant for NASAD, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, on university accreditation reviews across the nation. Today Loven works full time as an artist, curator and consultant.
